Mercedes-AMG is expanding its new electric GT 4-Door Coupe range with a less powerful GT 53, but it still tries to bring some old-school drama through the speakers.

The GT 53 can recreate the sound of the former E 53 Coupe’s 3.0-litre inline-six, even though it uses two electric motors instead of a combustion engine. Mercedes-AMG says engineers recorded the real car using 16 microphone positions inside and outside the vehicle. In total, they completed more than 100 measurements to capture its character in different situations.

That soundtrack comes to life in the AMGFORCE Sport+ driving mode, along with simulated gear changes controlled through the steering-wheel paddles. Brief interruptions in power delivery are also added to make the fake shifts feel more convincing.

Performance remains strong even without the three axial-flux motors used by the GT 55 and GT 63. The GT 53 produces up to 544PS, or roughly 536bhp, and 800Nm of torque. It can accelerate from 0-62mph in 3.9 seconds without rollout, with top speed limited to 143mph. The optional AMG Driver’s Package raises that to 155mph.
Range is another area where the GT 53 has an advantage. Its 106kWh battery delivers a provisional WLTP figure of up to 809km, or around 503 miles. The 800-volt electrical system also supports DC charging at up to 600kW.
At a suitably powerful charger, Mercedes-AMG says 10 minutes can add as much as 534km, or roughly 332 miles, of WLTP range. A 10-to-80% charge can take as little as 11 minutes under the right conditions.
The GT 53 also comes with AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive. Its front motor can disconnect when it is not needed to improve efficiency. Air suspension with adaptive damping is standard, and active aerodynamic elements help balance stability and range.
Sales in Germany begin on August 13, with prices starting at €115,430. US buyers will have to wait longer, as the GT 53 is expected to arrive in early 2027.
