Ford’s affordable electric pickup finally has a name, with the new Fathom set to arrive at a starting price just below $30,000.
Fathom starts at $28,350 before destination and delivery fees, according to Ford. Add the $1,595 destination charge and the total rises to $29,945, keeping the truck close to Ford’s promised $30,000 starting point.
That price applies to the standard-range battery, suggesting a longer-range version could follow at a higher price. Ford has not revealed the battery capacity, driving range or charging speeds yet, with more details still to come.
What we do know is that Fathom will be the first vehicle built on Ford’s Universal Electric Vehicle Platform. It will seat five and is projected to offer more passenger space than a Toyota RAV4. Buyers will also get both a pickup bed and a front trunk for extra storage.
Every Fathom will come with the hardware needed for Ford’s BlueCruise hands-free highway driving system. A large touchscreen, digital key, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility are also confirmed, with Apple Maps powering the built-in navigation.
Bidirectional power capability is included as well, allowing the truck’s battery to provide electricity outside the vehicle. Ford has not yet detailed how much power it will supply or exactly what functions will be supported.
Fathom will be built at Ford’s Louisville Assembly Plant using the company’s new Universal EV Production System. Ford says the new approach is designed to make EV production faster and more efficient as it works to keep costs down.
The unusual name comes from an old measure based on the span of a person’s outstretched arms. “Fathom” reflects the idea of understanding how customers live and creating a more spacious, adaptable vehicle around them.
Preorders are due to open in early 2027, with the truck itself arriving later that year.
