Louis Vuitton’s trunks have travelled just about everywhere over the years, and for Spring/Summer 2027, the house is sending them somewhere new: under the sea.
As Hypebeast reports, the new High Trunks are part of Pharrell Williams’ men’s Spring/Summer 2027 collection, where water and surf culture run through the wider theme. Instead of simply changing the colours, Louis Vuitton has played with leather marquetry, mother of pearl, acrylic and mirrored chrome to make each trunk feel completely different.
The most detailed of the lot is the one-off Leather Marquetry “Under the Sea” Courrier Lozine 110. More than 1,500 individually cut pieces from over 35 types of leather come together to form coral reefs, tropical fish and aquatic plants. Even the metal corners get in on the theme, with shell-shaped details carrying the ocean look beyond the artwork itself.

Another version takes a more luminous approach, using more than 2,000 hand-cut pieces of sustainably sourced mother of pearl. They are set into smoked larch wood, giving the Monogram a shimmering finish that changes as the light moves across it.

Then there is the Chrome Wave, which looks much more futuristic. Transparent acrylic is shaped into flowing wave-like forms, laser-engraved with the Monogram and finished with two silver chrome coatings. Hidden neon Monogram flowers add another surprise, and the inside switches back to traditional cream VVN leather.

Several other designs also pick up the collection’s ocean-inspired theme. Liquid Python trunks get a water-like finish, and the translucent Summer Captions version takes its colours from a seaside sunset. New shapes include the LV Turtle Trunk, Neo Briefcase Trunk and smaller Mini Malle Bijoux.
Selected High Trunks are available through Louis Vuitton stores and Savoir Rêver events. Some versions are made to order with an expected 10-month lead time, with more pieces due from January 2027.
Louis Vuitton has been making trunks for well over a century, but this collection proves there are still plenty of strange and beautiful ways to rethink one.
Opinion
The LV Trunk is a true icon at this point, and while most of us won’t ever have the chance to have one in our closet, it’s still a yardstick for the brand.
Personally, I love these not as products, but as a marker for where the brand is taking its work next. I’d expect this ocean theme to play a larger part in more of its collections going forward, and I’m excited to see how that might take shape in other areas.
