Fat-loss advice can quickly become complicated, but Arnold Schwarzenegger’s old-school approach is much simpler than many modern diet plans.
Schwarzenegger outlined seven basic fat-loss rules in The New Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding. Some details reflect the bodybuilding thinking of the time, but the broader message remains useful – lose weight gradually, eat enough protein and keep training while calories are lower.

The seven rules
- Give yourself enough time to lose fat gradually.
- Reduce calories only until your weight starts to fall.
- Keep protein intake high to help protect muscle.
- Continue lifting weights throughout the diet.
- Use cardio to increase calorie expenditure.
- Get enough vitamins and minerals from nutritious foods.
- Learn how to count calories and recognise where they come from.
The rules basically cover the main parts of a sensible fat-loss plan. A slower pace can make it easier to train well and recover, while keeping protein high gives the body more support for maintaining muscle.
Schwarzenegger also advised against cutting food more aggressively than necessary. When a modest calorie reduction is already working, making the diet stricter may only increase hunger and affect performance.
Cardio adds another way to burn calories, but it does not replace resistance training. Continuing to lift gives the muscles a reason to remain, even as body weight begins to fall.

The advice in practice
Not every detail needs to be followed exactly. Frozen and canned foods can still be nutritious, and most people do not need to track every gram forever.
It can still help to pay attention to portions and less obvious sources of calories. Cooking oils, dressings, snacks and drinks often add more than people realise.
Taken together, Schwarzenegger’s advice is measured and practical. Eat a little less, keep training and give the process enough time to work as well.
