Ford’s long-rumoured four-door Mustang looks to be getting closer to production, with dealers reportedly shown a working prototype that promises plenty of performance at an affordable price.
Ford showed the car to dealers during a private event in Las Vegas last week, according to Automotive News. Attendees said the prototype was similar in size and shape to a Porsche Panamera, while Ford reportedly told them prices would start below $40,000.
One version of the four-door Mustang is said to reach 60mph in under four seconds. For now, though, it is not clear whether that figure applies to the entry-level model or a more powerful version higher up the range.
Ford has not revealed what will sit under the bonnet either. Previous reports have pointed to a possible hybrid setup, while the current Mustang is available with both four-cylinder EcoBoost and V8 engines. Neither option has been confirmed for the four-door model.
Rear-seat space should also be much more generous than in the two-door Mustang. Dealers were reportedly told the new car will offer more rear legroom than a Porsche Panamera, suggesting practicality will be a major part of its appeal.
The car has previously been referred to by Ford executives as the “Mach-4”, but there is no confirmation that the name will reach production. Reports of a four-door Mustang first emerged from another private dealer meeting around two years ago.
A launch date is still unknown, and Ford has yet to publicly reveal the car or confirm any of the reported specifications. That means details such as pricing and performance could still change before it reaches showrooms.
Still, adding four doors and more usable rear seats would take the Mustang in a very different direction. If Ford can also keep the starting price below $40,000, the new model could offer an unusually accessible route into a fast four-door performance car.
