Bentley is slowly revealing more of its first fully electric car, and the latest look at the Torcal shows that its cabin will focus on much more than simply covering everything in screens.
The Torcal introduces a new Curation Engine that brings together lighting, sound, climate, air quality and digital information. According to Bentley, the system can also work with vehicle settings such as the suspension and powertrain to change the overall feel of the cabin.
Drivers can choose between four modes, starting with the default Bentley Mode. This aims to balance comfort with a more engaging driving experience, while Comfort Mode softens the lighting and calms the cabin for longer journeys. There is even a digital detox option that reduces the amount of information shown on the displays.
Sport Mode takes things in the opposite direction, making the soundtrack more intense and sharpening the visual cues around the cabin. Refresh Mode is arguably the most unusual, increasing fresh-air circulation and brightening the lighting in an effort to improve alertness and reduce fatigue on longer drives.
The controls themselves have been given the usual Bentley treatment. A physical rotary controller sits in the centre of the cabin, with Motor1 noting that it is surrounded by the premium materials and detailed switchgear you would expect from the British luxury brand.
Bentley is carrying one of its oldest design signatures into the digital age too. Its diamond pattern appears throughout the Torcal, including in graphics created by filming light passing through hand-cut crystal pieces from Cumbria Crystal. That gives the effect a more physical origin than relying entirely on computer-generated visuals.
Even the electric soundtrack has received special attention. Bentley worked with musicians using drums, viola and bass guitar to create sounds inspired by the rhythm and character of its traditional V8 engines instead of simply trying to imitate one.
