A rare chapter in the history of the 501 is coming back, with Levi’s recreating a pair that first appeared during a major turning point for its most famous jeans.

The new 1942 501 comes from Levi’s Vintage Clothing and is described as a stitch-for-stitch reproduction of the original. It uses heavyweight 12oz red selvedge denim, along with several details that would soon disappear as wartime restrictions changed how the 501 was made.

That makes the 1942 version something of a bridge between two eras. It still has an adjustable cinch at the back alongside belt loops, giving wearers two ways to secure the waist. Hidden rivets, an inverted yoke seam and the single-sided Big E Red Tab add even more period-correct detail.

The jeans arrive unwashed too, so the raw denim can pick up its own fades and wear over time. Levi’s has even recreated some of the smaller touches, including the Two Horse leather patch, original-style paper flasher and a decorative dollar-bill insert.

Getting hold of a pair may be the harder part. The 1942 501 launched in limited numbers in the US and Asia on August 13, with the US version priced at $295 and already listed as sold out.

Japan received pairs through the Levi’s Store Kyoto and an online lottery at ¥66,000. European buyers will get another chance on September 3, although availability is expected to remain limited.

For anyone fascinated by vintage denim, this is about as close as you can get to a fresh pair of 501s from 1942. More than a simple reissue, it brings back a short-lived version of the jeans that few people would ever get to experience otherwise.
