Paul Smith and Artek have teamed up again to give one of the world’s most recognisable stools a colourful new look.
Edition Three of the Stool 60 is available now, continuing a collaboration between the two brands that began in 2024. The latest version keeps Alvar Aalto’s three-legged design but introduces colours taken from Paul Smith’s Signature Stripe.
Each birch leg comes in a different shade, with Lemon Yellow, Burgundy and Melrose Pink adding more personality to the otherwise simple design. The seat keeps a natural wood finish on top, but turning it over reveals a hidden Malachite Green underside.
That concealed colour has become a recurring feature of the collaboration. It adds a small surprise to a design that has changed very little since Finnish architect Alvar Aalto created the original Stool 60 in 1933.
The stool remains just as versatile as before, working as a seat, side table or display surface. Several can also be stacked together, with the differently coloured legs creating a striped effect that nods to Paul Smith’s signature design language.
Edition Three follows two earlier versions of the Stool 60 created with the British designer. Artek says all three editions have now been restocked, giving collectors the option to mix the different colour combinations together.
Paul Smith currently lists Edition Three at €390 in Europe, while the US store shows a price of $415. As a limited-edition release, availability may vary by region and retailer.
The stool is available through Paul Smith’s website and selected Paul Smith stores, combining Aalto’s 1930s design with enough colour to make even a simple place to sit feel like a statement piece.
