Honda’s quirky Element could be making a comeback, and it sounds like the boxy SUV may return as a hybrid. According to Automotive News, Honda’s North American division has reportedly decided to revive the Element as part of a wider strategy shift.
The new model is expected to arrive around late 2028 or sometime in 2029.
A return would be a pretty big deal for Honda fans, especially given how distinctive the original Element was. Launched more than two decades ago, it built a loyal following thanks to its unusual boxy shape, practical cabin, and outdoorsy attitude. It was not exactly a conventional SUV, but that was also part of the appeal.
The old Element had rear-hinged doors, a large cargo area, washable flooring, and tough interior materials. In other words, it was built for people who wanted something practical, simple and easy to live with, particularly if they spent a lot of time outdoors.
The new version is still light on details, but the report claims it will use a gas-electric hybrid powertrain and all-wheel drive. That would make sense, especially as Honda is reportedly shifting more focus back toward combustion and hybrid models after scaling back some of its more ambitious EV plans.
Where Honda positions the revived Element could make a big difference. The model is expected to slot between the HR-V and CR-V in Honda’s lineup, which means it may be slightly smaller than the original. It is also expected to target buyers looking at rugged compact SUVs like the Ford Bronco Sport, Jeep Cherokee, and Toyota RAV4.
This kind of positioning may work better now than it did when the Element disappeared. Boxy, adventure-ready SUVs are having a moment again, and Honda already has a name that fits right into that space.
Honda has not fully detailed the new Element, so this is not a done deal yet. Even so, if the report holds up, Honda may be bringing back one of its strangest and most practical SUVs at exactly the right time.
