David Beckham wore one of Tudor’s best-looking new watches at the World Cup quarter-final, and it was a reminder that smaller dive watches can still make a strong statement. Beckham was spotted at England’s World Cup quarter-final against Norway wearing the Tudor Black Bay 54 in Blue. The watch matched his navy suit and tie, giving the whole look a more coordinated finish.
At 37mm, the Black Bay 54 Blue is noticeably smaller than Tudor’s 39mm Black Bay 58. Those proportions bring it closer to the brand’s early dive watches from the 1950s, particularly the Oyster Prince Submariner reference 7922 that inspired the Black Bay 54 line.
Tudor has leaned heavily into that heritage. On its official Black Bay 54 Blue page, the brand says the model pays tribute to its past with a deep sapphire “Tudor blue” dial and matching bezel.
The blue finish gives the watch a different character from the standard black Black Bay 54. It looks richer under formal lighting, which helps explain why it worked so well with Beckham’s dark tailoring without appearing overly coordinated.
Despite its vintage styling, the watch uses modern hardware throughout. Tudor’s Manufacture Calibre MT5400 is COSC-certified and offers around 70 hours of power reserve. The watch also includes 200 metres of water resistance, luminous hands and hour markers, and the brand’s T-fit clasp for quick bracelet adjustments.
Beckham’s version is listed at $4,725, putting it on the more accessible side of luxury sports watches. That is still a serious amount of money, but it is far less intimidating than many celebrity-worn watches.
Bigger watches often grab attention first, especially on a stadium-sized stage. Beckham’s Black Bay 54 Blue makes the opposite argument, showing how a smaller, better-proportioned watch can look just as sharp.
