McDonald’s China has turned its brown takeaway bag into a backpack filled with fry-themed details. The limited-edition design launched through its app and WeChat store on July 23 as part of the 12th Big Fries Day.
Called the Big Fries Backpack, the design grew from a handmade concept shared online by McDonald’s fan and craft creator Daomeidan. McDonald’s later invited the creator to help turn the idea into an official product.
Its exterior recreates the look of the company’s takeaway packaging using a lightweight paper-like material. Golden Arches graphics and folded-bag details complete the effect, while a removable receipt-shaped charm hangs from the front.
Even the smaller details follow the food theme, with zipper pulls designed to resemble fries dipped in ketchup. A pair of red fry-carton pockets attaches to the sides with Velcro and can be removed when a less bulky shape is preferred.
Those side pockets can apparently hold real portions of fries, though carrying hot, greasy food against a paper-textured bag may require some confidence. A separate section inside also provides space for ketchup packets.
Despite its novelty design, the backpack has enough practical features for everyday use. The padded main compartment includes dividers and can hold a 13- or 14-inch laptop.
A holder on the shoulder strap can keep a fry carton upright, which may be useful for dedicated McDonald’s fans. It also makes the backpack difficult to mistake for an ordinary fashion accessory.
The Big Fries Backpack was released exclusively through McDonald’s China as part of its annual summer celebration. With its packaging-inspired shape and surprisingly usable interior, it turns a fast-food order into something designed to be carried long after the fries are gone.
