Emirates is trying to solve a problem many economy passengers know well: falling asleep, losing neck support and slowly drifting towards the person in the next seat. According to Emirates, its new U-Dream Headrest is designed to support the head and neck without the need for a travel pillow.
The adjustable headrest forms part of the Z400 Economy Class seat made by Safran Seats. Covered in leather, it has flexible side wings that fold inwards to cradle the head and help stop passengers from slumping forwards or sideways.
Travellers can also move the headrest vertically and adjust its tilt to suit their height and preferred sleeping position. Emirates says cabin crew have been trained to help passengers use it, while the leather surface can be wiped down and cleaned after every flight.
The rollout is already under way, with the U-Dream Headrest currently installed on three Emirates A350 aircraft. The airline plans to add it to all of its A350s by the end of 2026.
From 2027, the headrest will begin appearing on most of the Airbus A380s and Boeing 777s included in Emirates’ retrofit programme. It will also come fitted to all 270 Boeing 777X aircraft the airline has ordered.
Emirates president Sir Tim Clark described the headrest as a major improvement for long-haul economy travel. He said it brings fuller neck support to Economy Class and could remove the need for passengers to carry their own neck pillows.
The design has also been independently tested to meet European Union Aviation Safety Agency standards, according to Emirates.
A new headrest will not make an economy seat feel like Business Class, but it addresses one of the most frustrating parts of trying to sleep upright. For passengers who regularly wake up with a stiff neck – or on someone else’s shoulder – it could make a long flight noticeably more comfortable.
