Majority Audio has announced the Mini Shelford, a compact retro radio that adds a built-in rechargeable battery while keeping the price surprisingly low. Launching in August for £49.95 (approx. $67), it costs less than many portable Bluetooth speakers, despite offering DAB+, FM radio, and wireless streaming.
Battery power is the most important upgrade over the existing Little Shelford. That model requires four AA batteries when used away from a mains supply and offers up to 15 hours of playback. By comparison, the Mini Shelford has a built-in 2600mAh rechargeable battery that extends the quoted runtime to as much as 20 hours.
Majority has also revised the proportions, creating a shorter and wider radio while preserving the vintage-inspired appearance associated with the Shelford range. Its compact footprint should make it suitable for a desk, bedside table, kitchen shelf or garden table without taking up much room.
Bluetooth connectivity allows the Mini Shelford to play music, podcasts, audiobooks and other audio streamed from a phone. Listeners who prefer traditional broadcasts can switch between DAB+ and FM radio, while a 3.5mm headphone socket provides an option for private wired listening.
A full-colour display shows album artwork and track information, with the main functions controlled through a rotary dial. Majority has also included a dual alarm and sleep timer, allowing the radio to work as a bedside device as well as a portable speaker and radio.
Four finishes will be available at launch: Dusty Rose, Olive, Black and Cream. Each version combines the same rechargeable battery and wireless features with the Shelford range’s vintage-inspired design.
At under $70, the Mini Shelford looks like a strong option for anyone who wants a small radio with a bit more personality. It keeps the vintage feel, but the rechargeable battery makes it much easier to live with.
