Victorinox has a new field-ready multi-tool for people who need something tougher than a basic pocket knife. The Ranger 79 M Grip is a Swiss-made pocket knife built for outdoor work. It sits in the brand’s Ranger series, which is aimed at skilled craftsmen and tested by professionals.
The Ranger 79’s main feature is a large locking blade built for more demanding work. It has a thumb hole for one-handed opening, making it easier to deploy when your other hand is busy. The locking mechanism should also give the blade more stability during heavier tasks.
Victorinox has also included a wood saw, which makes sense for a tool designed for the forest, campsite, or workshop. That pushes the Ranger 79 M Grip further toward outdoor use, compared with smaller Swiss Army knives built mainly for everyday carry.
Grip and control are also key parts of the Ranger 79 M Grip’s design. The tool uses two-component scales, which are designed to provide better control when conditions are wet or your hands are tired. At 130mm long and 167g, it is larger and heavier than many classic Victorinox models, but still compact enough to carry in a pack or pocket.
There are 12 functions in total, including tweezers, toothpick, key ring, corkscrew, reamer, punch, sewing awl, can opener, bottle opener, wire stripper, and screwdrivers. That leaves it with enough range for quick fixes without turning it into an oversized tool kit.
The Ranger 79 M Grip is made in Switzerland and covered by Victorinox’s lifetime warranty. It is not the smallest Swiss Army knife you can buy, but that is not really the point.
This is a more rugged Victorinox built for people who actually plan to use it outdoors. For field work, camping jobs or simple repairs away from home, the Ranger 79 seems like a practical step up from the brand’s lighter everyday models.
