Ducati has shown a new version of its Desmo450 platform, and this one looks like the most aggressive take so far. With the Desmo450 SM Prototipo, Ducati is previewing its first racing Supermotard and giving its off-road single a slick-tired circuit setup.
The new model is based on the Desmo450 MX, Ducati’s first motocross bike with desmodromic timing. Since that bike arrived, Ducati has already started stretching the platform into different directions, including enduro, cross-country, and factory-style versions. The SM Prototipo now pushes the same idea into Supermotard racing.
There is a reason Ducati is treating this as more than another road-focused performance bike. Ducati says the Desmo450 SM marks its entry into the FIM S1GP class, where bikes are built for tight, technical circuits that mix asphalt sections with dirt-style riding. As a result, the new prototype has a very different purpose from Ducati’s usual performance street machines.
Ducati has not released the full spec sheet yet, but the company has confirmed that the SM version gets its own dedicated setup. Changes include specific wheels, brakes, suspension, engine components, and bodywork elements designed for Supermotard use.
Visually, the prototype already looks much more focused than the motocross version. The slick tyres, compact stance, and race-ready bodywork give it a more purposeful Supermotard look, while the red Ducati finish keeps it closely tied to the brand’s racing identity.
The Desmo450 SM Prototipo was previewed at World Ducati Week, with more details expected at its full debut in September. For now, Ducati is clearly using the Desmo450 platform to move deeper into lightweight off-road racing.
Ducati’s single-cylinder off-road project is starting to look bigger than one motocross bike. This Supermotard version makes the Desmo450 platform even more interesting, especially if it leads to more production models built around Ducati’s new off-road base.
