A cancelled Vans collaboration has ended up getting a second life in an unexpected way, with the unreleased sneakers selling for just $5.
Streetwear label Fugazi announced the sale on Instagram with the simple message: “$5 Shoes. Cash only. No change.” Pairs were offered outside its Los Angeles store on August 15 and New York location the following day, drawing sizeable crowds at both releases.
The story goes back to June, when Vans announced a collaboration with Fugazi, the Los Angeles clothing label founded by Trevor Gorji. Despite sharing a name, the brand has no connection to the influential Washington, DC punk band Fugazi, whose long-standing stance against conventional merchandise quickly made the partnership controversial.

Dischord Records, co-founded by Fugazi frontman Ian MacKaye, stepped in to make the distinction clear, saying the band had nothing to do with the project. Drummer Brendan Canty went further, calling the collaboration “tone deaf” in an interview with Consequence.
Vans executive Steve Van Doren later apologised for the confusion and confirmed that he had spoken with MacKaye. The wider retail release never went ahead, leaving Fugazi with a nine-piece footwear collection that included eight versions of the Authentic and a printed Slip-On.
Rather than leaving those shoes unreleased, Fugazi turned the cancellation into its own $5 drop. The price appears to be a deliberate nod to the punk band, which became known for keeping concert tickets around $5 as part of its approach to making shows more accessible. An online draw also gave customers the chance to buy pairs for $5 plus shipping.

The whole situation is an unusual ending for a collaboration that was pulled before reaching stores. What began with confusion over two very different Fugazis eventually became a $5 sneaker release that played directly into the controversy surrounding it.
