A little-known piece of golf history is making a comeback, as Red Wing teams up with Malbon on a new Moc Oxford made for the course.
The collaboration takes Red Wing’s familiar workwear style and gives it a lower-profile shape that feels more at home on the fairway. Malbon has the shoes available now for $400 in the US, finished in Red Wing’s warm Oro Legacy leather.
As Gear Patrol points out, Red Wing once made the #404 sport and golf Oxford, giving the brand a connection to the game that has largely faded from view. This new version looks quite different, but it brings that part of the archive back in a much more recognisable Red Wing shape.
Full-grain Oro Legacy leather covers the upper and comes from Red Wing’s own S.B. Foot Tanning Company. The moc-toe stitching gives it some of the character of the brand’s Classic Moc boots, and the oiled leather should develop more character the longer it is worn.
Golf shoes usually rely on spikes or aggressive traction, but Red Wing has gone with its Traction Tred outsole here. The wedge-shaped sole is designed to provide grip on the course without making the Moc Oxford feel like something you would only wear for a round of golf.
Some of the brand’s traditional construction carries over as well. A Goodyear leather welt means the shoes can be resoled once the original outsole wears down, and the No. 23 last gives the forefoot and instep a little more room.
Malbon offers the Moc Oxford in US men’s sizes 7 to 13, although not every half size is available.
At $400, this is certainly not an impulse purchase for the occasional golfer. But for Red Wing fans, reviving a forgotten part of its golf history makes this collaboration more interesting.
