Vans’ checkerboard slip-on sneakers are some of the most iconic shoes out there. Now, the brand has gently tweaked the formula, to offer something a little more versatile for older users.
The new Vans Premium Classic Slip-On Shoe trades out canvas panelling for leather, taking the shoe from a sneaker to something with a more formal feel. Sure, it’s probably not going to be smart enough for any really classy events, but it at least feels more like an adult shoe than others in the range.
Using a beautiful Demitasse Brown colorway, the checkerboard pattern is much more muted than on classic designs. We’re looking at two different shades of one colour, rather than the more contrasty white-and-color designs of old, which slips under the radar in an if you know, you know way.
The model features a padded collar for support, while elastic side panels remain present and correct to help you get them on and off with ease. Higher sidewalls should also make for a more comfortable fit, and keep your feet in place despite the slip-on nature of the design.
All of that sits upon the classic rubber base – treated with a matching brown hue, here – with the waffle pattern on the outsole providing reliable grip in all manner of conditions. The inside makes use of a Sola Foam All-Day Comfort insole, too, which should help when wearing them for longer sessions.
It’s not the first example of a more elder-focused shoe we’ve seen from the brand. Recently, the brand has been putting out a range of more sensible footwear, including loafers and a collaborative effort with Harris Tweed.
Personally, I’m a huge fan of these shoes. I lived in the old-school slip-on’s as a teenager, and I’ve always wanted to get another pair. As I get older, though, it can sometimes feel a little too much like an attempt to cling to my youth.
These offer a neat little hybrid – smart enough that you don’t look like you’re trying too hard, but with all the personality and flair required to feel cool. That’s a lot to love for just $90.
