House of Hazelwood has added a 34-year-old Scotch whisky to its Legacy Collection, pairing a tiny production run with an unusually approachable price for the brand. Calm Waters is priced at £950, with just 297 individually numbered bottles available worldwide.
While that still places it firmly in luxury territory, it costs much less than several other releases in the collection, which can reach several thousand pounds.
The blended malt is made from heavier Speyside whiskies matured in a mix of first-fill and refill Spanish sherry casks. It is bottled at its natural cask strength of 52.1% ABV without added colour or chill filtration, and comes in a 70cl decanter with a presentation box.
The whisky takes its name from the River Spey, which runs through one of Scotland’s best-known whisky-producing regions. House of Hazelwood compares the river’s calm appearance and powerful current with a spirit that initially feels measured before revealing more weight and complexity.
Its tasting notes lean towards darker, richer flavours, beginning with treacle toffee and liquorice on the nose. Fennel and linseed add a fresher herbal character, while the palate is described as full-bodied and intense, followed by an exceptionally long finish.
Calm Waters joins House of Hazelwood’s Legacy Collection, a range built around unusual parcels of aged Scotch selected from the Gordon family’s private inventory. The wider stock has been assembled over generations and includes whiskies linked to production styles and distilleries that may no longer exist.
At £950, Calm Waters is one of the more affordable ways into the collection. Other bottles, including the 48-year-old A Different World and 47-year-old The Silent Partner, are currently priced above £3,000.
Availability is likely to be a bigger obstacle than cost for serious collectors. With fewer than 300 bottles produced, Calm Waters could disappear quickly.
