A new lightweight electric sports car from China could offer a more driver-focused alternative to the heavy, technology-packed performance EVs already on the market. Called the SC01, it is set to be introduced in the UK by the Small Sports Car Company, with a design inspired by the lightweight approach long associated with British motorsport (via PistonHeads).
One of the SC01’s biggest selling points is its claimed weight of 1,365kg, which is unusually low for an electric car. That puts it much closer to a traditional compact sports car than the MG Cyberster, which starts at 1,885kg.
Despite its lighter construction, the SC01 is still expected to deliver serious performance. A dual-motor, all-wheel-drive setup producing 435hp should allow it to accelerate from 0-62mph in under three seconds.
Its claimed range is 500km, or around 311 miles, based on China’s CLTC test cycle. Battery capacity and charging speeds have not yet been confirmed, with final specifications and pricing expected to be announced later.
Drivers may also be encouraged by the mechanical setup planned for the car. Double wishbone suspension and a steel spaceframe chassis are intended to give the SC01 a more direct, back-to-basics character.
Small Sports Car Company CEO Mark Cotton says the aim is to reduce weight, increase driver involvement and limit electronic interference. That approach could appeal to petrolheads who want an EV that prioritises steering, balance and connection over screens and software features.
Development has already moved beyond the concept stage, with prototypes due to arrive in the UK for testing before the end of the year. Right-hand-drive customer deliveries are currently planned to begin in April.
Should it live up to those claims, the SC01 could become one of the first electric sports cars to genuinely appeal to traditional driving enthusiasts.
