Porsche has made a big promise about the future of the 911, and purists will probably like this one. In a Porsche Newsroom post, CEO Dr Michael Leiters said “there will be no fully electric 911.” That means Porsche’s most iconic car is keeping its combustion engine, even as the brand continues to push into electrification.
That is a pretty important statement for a car as heritage-heavy as the 911. Since its arrival in 1963, the 911 has been closely tied to its rear-mounted boxer-six engine, which gives the car much of its character and distinctive sound.
For many Porsche fans, replacing that with a fully electric setup would be a step too far. Porsche clearly seems to understand that, even as it continues to update the 911 for a more electrified future.
The key word here is hybrid because Leiters said Porsche does not see hybrid technology as a temporary bridge for the 911. Instead, the company views its specially developed performance hybrid powertrain as a core part of the model’s future.
We have already seen that direction with the latest 911 Carrera GTS T-Hybrid, which introduced Porsche’s first production gas-electric version of its flat-six setup. Rather than replacing the combustion engine, the hybrid system is designed to boost performance while keeping the 911’s core identity intact.
Porsche’s wider Strategy 2035 is built around giving customers more than one route forward. The brand says it will continue investing in combustion-engined, hybrid and all-electric models, depending on the vehicle and customer demand.
That means electrification is not going away at Porsche. The Cayenne Electric is still being positioned as an important part of the brand’s EV future, while other models are expected to offer multiple powertrain options.
The 911, however, is different. It may become more electrified over time, but Porsche has now made its position clear: a fully electric 911 is not part of the plan.
