Tesla has finally brought the Model Y L to the US, giving its best-selling SUV a longer body and a six-seat layout. According to Tesla, the Model Y L Premium is now available to order in the US and Puerto Rico. Pricing starts at $61,990 before taxes and fees.
Tesla has stretched the Model Y L to make room for a more practical interior. It has a longer wheelbase than the regular Model Y, with a three-row, six-seat layout instead of the usual five-seat setup. Tesla lists overall length at 195.6 inches, compared with 188.6 inches for the Model Y Premium.
Inside, the Model Y L gets a 16-inch central touchscreen and an 8-inch second-row touchscreen. The first and second rows also get heated seats, while Engadget reports that the second row has powered armrests and the third row has power recline.
Despite the extra row, Tesla says the Model Y L still offers 89 cu ft of cargo space. The company also claims the boot can fit a 28-inch suitcase and a 20-inch suitcase, while the frunk can hold another 20-inch suitcase.
Performance remains fairly strong too. Tesla lists 325 miles of estimated range, a 4.4-second 0-60mph time and dual-motor all-wheel drive. Charging tops out at 250kW, with up to 164 miles added in 15 minutes on a suitable Supercharger.
The price is the part that may give buyers pause. At $61,990, the Model Y L costs much more than the entry-level Model Y and also sits above the regular Model Y Premium.
Tesla is also including 12 months of Full Self-Driving Supervised and 12 months of free Supercharging. Deliveries are expected to begin between September and October.
For families who wanted a roomier Model Y without moving to a different brand, the Model Y L may make sense. But with a price tag close to $62,000, Tesla is clearly treating this as a premium version rather than a budget-friendly three-row EV.
