Leica has launched a new full-frame mirrorless camera, and yes, it is every bit as expensive as you would expect. The new Leica SL3-P pairs a 44MP full-frame BSI sensor with 8K video recording. It sits between the higher-resolution Leica SL3 and the faster, lower-resolution SL3-S.
Like Leica’s other “P” models, the SL3-P drops the brand’s famous red dot badge from the front. That gives it a cleaner and more understated look, although the price is still very Leica.
The camera costs $6,690 for the body only. This is cheaper than the Leica SL3, which now costs $7,485, but more expensive than the SL3-S, which is priced at $5,665. And that is before adding L-mount lenses, so the real cost could climb quickly.
The SL3-P uses a full-frame back-side illuminated sensor and can shoot still images with up to 14 stops of dynamic range. It also supports Multishot images at up to 176MP, which gives photographers a higher-resolution option when the scene allows for it.
Leica is also trying to make the SL3-P seem less like a slow, studio-only camera. It can shoot at up to 40 frames per second with full autofocus support. The new hybrid autofocus system also uses 819 phase-detection points and machine learning-based subject recognition.
It gives video shooters plenty to work with as well. The SL3-P supports 8K open-gate video, HDMI RAW video up to 8K/30p, 5.8K ProRes and 4K recording at up to 120p. This makes it a serious hybrid option for photographers who also want high-resolution video tools.
Around the back, there is a tiltable 3.2-inch display with 2.3 million dots, along with a 5.76 million-dot OLED viewfinder. The body is also IP54-rated and made in Germany, with a minimalist full-metal design.
The Leica SL3-P is available now through Leica stores, Leica’s online store, and authorised dealers. It is not exactly a mainstream choice, but for Leica fans who want something between the SL3 and SL3-S, this is the new middle option in the lineup.
